Il corso consiste in un viaggio guidato nella dinamica dei fluidi, con
particolare riferimento al moto di vortici nel piano.
Una rilevante parte applicativa, basata sulle simulazioni numeriche, consente di
visualizzare le principali fenomenologie oggetto del corso.

Dopo aver richiamato brevemente la descrizione matematica del flusso, in termini
di equazioni del moto e delle loro principali conseguenze, viene approfondita la
dinamica della vorticità nel piano in un fluido isocoro e non viscoso.
Vengono presentati ed analizzati i modelli di vortice uniforme, puntiforme
e di superficie vorticosa e vengono sviluppati i principali algoritmi numerici
in grado di simularne il moto.
Infine, l'analisi viene estesa al moto in presenza di un corpo rigido, con
particolare riferimento all'azione del flusso sul corpo e quindi al calcolo
delle risultanti delle forze e dei momenti.

Il corso si propone di mettere in grado lo studente di studiare con profitto
qualunque testo di Meccanica dei Fluidi presente in letteratura.
Viene inoltre stimolata la capacità dello studente di costruire un modello
matematico per descrivere un flusso e di approssimarne (numericamente) la
soluzione al variare dei dati (iniziali) e dei parametri, acquisendo in tal modo
una sensibilità rispetto ad entrambi.

Sono richieste conoscenze di base di analisi matematica e della meccanica
del punto materiale.
E' inoltre richiesto l'uso di un computer dotato di un sistema operativo
unix, come Ubuntu.

Il corso si articola in lezioni ed esercitazioni frontali.
La parte esercitativa è di grande importanza ed è svolta in modalità
frontale per superare le difficoltà iniziali nell'uso del linguaggio di
programmazione fortran e nell'implementazione di integratori numerici.
Le lezioni occupano 5 cfu (40 ore), mentre le esercitazioni 3 cfu (36 ore).

L'esame consiste nella discussione di una relazione.
Ad ogni studente viene assegnato il compito di studiare un flusso, costruendo
un modello matematico e calcolando le soluzioni al variare di dati (iniziali)
e parametri.
Viene anche curata la presentazione professionale della relazione e dei
risultati ottenuti.

Il sistema operativo Ubunto è gratuitamente scaricabile da internet.
Lo svolgimento delle esercitazioni è basato sull'utilizzo di programmi
gratuiti (il compilatore fortran, i programmi di grafica e di scrittura
sono scaricabili gratuitamente).
Non è richiesta alcuna forma di licenza.

The course proposes an introductory trip in fluid dynamics, with particular
attention to the motion of the vortices on a plane.
All the issues discussed from a theoretical point of view are also handled
from a numerical point of view, so that several codes aimed to the simulation of
the vortex motion are written.

In some detail, after a brief discussion about the equations of motion and
their fundamental properties, the vortex dynamics in free space is deeply
analyzed.
The simplest context is adopted, by assuming that the motion occurs in free space
and taking the fluid as isochoric (constant and uniform density) and inviscid.
Three important models of vortices are presented.
The kinematics and the dynamics of uniform vortices are firstly investigated, and
a numerical code aimed to simulate their motion is built.
Filamentation, assialsimmetrization and merging phenomena are directly calculated
by the students.
The analysis is then extended to the model of point vortex, the mathematical
handling of which has many subtle aspects.
The equilibria and the motion of several point vortices are numerically
investigated by means of a numerical code written by the students.
This kind of vortex plays an essential role in investigating the third model of
vortices: the vortex sheet, an ubiquitous fluid phenomenon in everyday life.
Its mathematical handling is difficult, as well as the numerical simulation
of its motion.
Both issues are deeply investigated.

In the last part of the course, the motion of vortices in presence of
boundaries is investigated, with special reference to the vortex dynamics
in presence of a bounded body.
The force and the momentum induced on the body by the vortex motion are
calculated, and in this way the behaviour of fishes, birds and airplanes is
understood.
In particular, the motion of the vortex sheets relased by a flat plate, as well
as the resulting force and momentum acting on the plate, are calculated.

The main aim of the course is to enable the student to read and
understand any text about fluid dynamics in literature.
The student is also encouraged to build a mathematical model for describing
the main features of a flow and to evaluate its solution by means of a fortran
code.
By changing (initial) data and parameters, the student evaluates the quality
of his approximate solution and tries to understand what happens in his flow.

Basic tools of calculus are needed (as ode and Green formulae), as well as some
preliminary knowledge of the mechanics of particle systems.
It is also required the use of a computer working equipped with a unix operating
system, as Ubuntu.

The course is held by means of frontal lessons and exercises.
The applied part is very important and it is carried out in presence,
in order to overcome technical difficulties in using fortran language and
numerical integration methods.
The lessons take 5 cfu (40 hours), while the exercises 3 cfu (36 hours).

The exam consists in discussing a report made by the student.
To every student is assigned the task of investigating a certain flow,
by building a suitable mathematical model and by numerically evaluating its
solutions for different (initial) data and parameters.
The presentation of the report, and in particular of the obtained results, is
also considered in order to prepare the student for his professional life.

The operative system Ubuntu is free.
It can be downloaded from internet.
The exercises are built by means of free software (the fortran compiler,
the graphical and editing tools are free).
No licenses are required.
